Consensys Software Inc. (CSI) announced on September 9, 2026, plans to split into two independently operated companies by the end of 2026.
The existing legal entity will rebrand as MetaMask and focus on self-custodial consumer finance. Joe Lubin will serve as chairman and chief executive of MetaMask.
A newly formed company will carry the Consensys name and assume the Protocols Group and institutional blockchain infrastructure operations. This includes Linea, the Ethereum Layer 2 network, Besu Ethereum execution client, and Teku consensus client.
Mike Kriak will lead the new Consensys as CEO. David Cunningham will serve as president. Joe Lubin will act as executive chairman.
The move separates the consumer wallet platform from protocol development and enterprise infrastructure work. MetaMask will expand focus to payments, savings, and investment products alongside its wallet.
