Cronos halts blockchain after $75 million lending exploit on Tectonic

Aug 31, 2026 · SECURITY

Cronos paused its blockchain after a lending exploit on Tectonic, a lending app on the network. Marshalling the facts reported by CoinDesk: an attacker allegedly pushed Tectonic's thinly traded TONIC token up roughly 100-fold, then used the token as collateral to borrow real assets. When Cronos validators halted the network, most of those funds were left stranded. CoinDesk reports the incident as roughly a $75 million exploit. Cronos is an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain.
