Draft EIP-8363 'Tapered Issuance Burn' would cut Ethereum staking yield toward zero near 50% staked supply

Aug 9, 2026 · ETH

Six Ethereum researchers, including the Ethereum Foundation's Justin Drake, published draft EIP-8363, dubbed 'Tapered Issuance Burn.' The proposal would progressively burn a rising share of validator (consensus-layer) rewards as the ETH staking ratio climbs. Validator yield would fall from roughly 2.6% toward zero once about 60.25 million ETH, roughly half of current supply, is staked. The change would phase in over 18 months.

The proposal is a draft only. It has not been approved and is not scheduled for the Hegotá upgrade. It has drawn public opposition from DeFi figures, including SharpLink CEO Joseph Chalom and Aave founder Stani Kulechov, who argue it would weaken Ethereum's DeFi economy and its case against Bitcoin.
