Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $77,200 on Friday, Aug 21, 2026, bringing the corporate treasury of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), the world's largest corporate bitcoin holder, back above its breakeven level. The price rose past Strategy's average cost basis of $75,385 across its 840,447 BTC holdings (BitcoinTreasuries), leaving the treasury with an estimated year-to-date gain of about $450 million. BTC gained roughly 20% over 48 hours with little consolidation. TradingView data showed new local highs above $77,400 ahead of the Wall Street open. Earlier this month (between Aug 3 and Aug 9) Strategy released a small portion of that treasury, reducing its holdings by 1,690 BTC, to repurchase 1.15 million STRC preferred shares for $108.6 million, its fourth BTC reduction of 2026. The rally followed a US Treasury plan to at least double its 10-30 year buyback operations to $4 billion each from Sept 9, and as US public debt passed $40 trillion.
