On August 18, 2026, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) proposed “Regulation Crypto Assets” (Reg Crypto), its first formal rulemaking covering crypto offerings.
The most widely reported detail is a $75 million offering exemption for crypto tokens, together with a framework under which a token could later cease to count as a security.
The SEC is advancing the proposal through its own rulemaking process after the CLARITY Act stalled in Congress. The proposal was reported by Reuters, Bloomberg, The Block, CoinDesk and Yahoo Finance.
